Fender Jazzmasters have rightly seen a big increase in interest over recent years after a long period of being something of a cult guitar, favoured by a loyal following of innovative indie/alternative players.
This early slab board JM is from early 1959 and is completely original. The body has a pencil date of October 1958 in the bridge pick up cavity, the neck is dated Jan '59 and the main circuit volume pot is dated 26th week of '59. The tone pot date is obscured by the capacitor but looks original with no disturbed solder - see pictures for detailed shots of the electrics.
The original sunburst finish has the attractive deep, wide sunburst typical of the era and is in overall good condition. There is natural play wear and light lacquer checking on the front of the guitar along with more pronounced wear on the edges and a good amount of buckle rash on the back. The guitar has been extensively used during its 65 year existence but not abused. There is a section on the upper edge where some of the black paint has flaked slightly along the lacquer checking lines - see pictures.
The neck has a slim and fast profile typical of 1959 and '60 Jazzmasters. The original frets have plenty of life left in them and the rosewood board is nice and dark and waxy. There is some natural play wear on the back of the neck and overall feel is smooth and fast.
The electrics are totally original with no disturbed solder anywhere. At some point someone has added some foil shielding on the inside of the pick-up covers to reduce hum but this is the only none original element of the electrics. The original black bottom pick-ups have that distinctive and instantly recognisable early Jazzmaster tone which is slightly darker than the later grey bottom pick-up JM tone.
This is a very vibey vintage Jazzmaster that plays and sounds fanatastic. These early gold guard Jazzmasters don't come up very often especially these days so here is a great opportunity to own a very collectible piece of Fender history.
Comes with the original tweed covered Fender case which is in good condition with fully working latches. The leather end sections have been fully restored with new aged vintage correct leather.
