First launched in 1958 as Fender’s new top-of-the-line flagship model, the Fender Jazzmaster is rarely, if ever, seen in the hands of jazz players. Its radical (for the time) off-set solid body was perhaps considered too modern by jazz players used to playing more traditional hollow bodied archtop guitars. Instead the model initially found success as the guitar of choice of the emerging surf music players in the early 60’s. It then fell out of favour for a decade before being rediscovered by a number of new wave players in the 70’s, most notably Tom Verlaine of Television and Elvis Costello. From there the Jazzmaster has steadily built up a devoted following mainly among indie or alternative players and is now pretty much the de rigueur guitar in these circles. Lately it's come into the mainstream thanks to Taylor Swift who is often seen playing a Jazzmaster.
This early slab board JM is from the second half of 1959 and is totally original with the exception of two or three grub screws on the bridge, which are direct replacements. This is quite a common occurrance as the originals often get frozen.
The original blonde finish is in overall good condition and shows natural play wear to be expected for a 65 year old instrument with some light lacquer checking, scratches, nicks and edge wear. The guitar has been used but not abused.
The neck has a profile which is typical of 1959 and '60 Jazzmasters being slim and fast. The action is effortless to play and the original frets have plenty of life left in them. There is some natural play wear on the back of the neck mainly between the 1st and 8th frets where part the lacquer has worn through to the maple. The feel of the neck is smooth and fast.
The electrics are totally original with no disturbed solder anywhere. The main circuit has volume and tone pots dated 26th and 37th week of 1959 respectively. The rhythm circuit pots codes aren't easily readable without taking the whole harness out but there is nothing to suggest they aren't original and all solder joints are undisturbed. The original black bottom pick-ups have that distinctive and instantly recognisable early Jazzmaster tone which is slightly darker than the later grey bottom pick-up JM tone.
The nitro tortoiseshell guard shows some of the typical shrinkage which has resulted in a small crack near the bridge pick up and also a small missing piece on the upper edge near the pick-up selector switch - see pictures.
All in all this is a classic vintage Jazzmaster in good overall original condition. If you've been looking for an original early custom colour Jazzmaster to add to your collection or recording arsenal then look no further.
The last few years have rightfully seen a massive interest in original vintage Jazzmasters and prices have more or less doubled during this period and continue to rise.
Comes with the original brown tolex Fender case which is in good condition with fully working latches.
