Originally introduced in 1955 to fit between the Les Paul Junior and Les Paul Standard in Gibson’s line-up, the Les Paul Special has proved to be an enduring classic favoured by players and collectors for it’s no nonsense style and enormous tonal versatility.

In 1958 the body style of the Les Paul Special (along with the Les Paul Junior) changed from the original single cutaway to a double cutaway which enabled greater higher fretboard access.

This 1959 example features the early neck pick-up position (in 1960 the neck pick-up was moved back slightly) along with the most desirable '59 neck profile.

This guitar was fully restored by Player Grade Vintage a few years ago. Anyone familiar with the work of PGV will know just how highly regarded these restorations are in the vintage market.

The restoration included a complete refinish in TV Yellow done the correct vintage way as well as a very well done repair to the heel area which is virtually invisible. The finish has some light attractive lacquer checking.

There were some non original parts used during the restoration such as set of DiMarzio pots (but these are teamed with original bumble bee and grey tiger capacitors), a set of vintage 'milk bottle' Grover tuners, a repro wraparound bridge, a repro truss rod cover and a repro output jack plate.

The pick-ups, control knobs, pick guard, pick-up covers, poker chip, capacitors, strap buttons and control cavity cover are all correct vintage pieces.

The neck profile is just about the perfect example of the highly revered '59 profile. It's chunky but has soft enough shoulders to fit comfortably in the hand and is a great feeling neck to play.

The combination of the natural resonance of the slab mahogany body and neck combined with a pair of powerful P-90 pick-ups delivers loads of sustain and plenty of bottom end grunt and top end bite. It's a fat sounding and responsive guitar that can be either a primal, raw power tone machine or can clean up nicely to deliver fat Tele like twang from the bridge pick up, a full bodied chime from the middle position and warm soul and blues tones from the neck pick up.

Les Paul Specials really are superb guitars capable of providing killer tone in any genre, and this one ticks all the right tonal boxes. In the grand scheme of things '50's Specials are still undervalued in the vintage market.

Here is an opportunity to own an excellent player grade '59 Special in cool TV yellow.
