Like it’s elder siblings, the single and double cutaway Les Paul Juniors, the SG Junior has earned its reputation as a pure, primal tone machine. The stripped back, no frills simplicity of these guitars belies the range of sounds that can be coaxed from the simple one pick-up, volume and tone combo.
SG Juniors are known to be particularly lively guitars and this one is right up there with the best of them. When played acoustically it is surprisingly loud and extremely resonant, which coupled with the powerful P-90 translates into a classic ballsy Junior tone that sings and screams when cranked up, but is also warm and articulate and cleans up nicely when backed off.
The 1963 and ‘64 SG Juniors have the most desirable neck profiles, featuring a return to a chunkier neck profile after the slim (and somewhat flimsy) necks of ’61 and ’62, and before the narrow nut necks of ’65 onwards. This one has a nice, fat, almost 1959, profile that has a slight taper going up the neck and feels great to play. The frets are in really good shape with plenty of life left in them. It plays superbly.
In the past it has been ‘Grovered’ but is now fitted with a period correct set of 3 on a plate Kluson Deluxe repro tuners using conversion bushings. There are some slight indentations around the tuner posts from the Grover washers as to be expected. There is also a repaired small hairline crack running from the G tuner hole to the top edge of the headstock. This is very stable and should be of no real concern and very likely happened when it was originally drilled to take the Grovers.
Other than the repro tuners, the rest of the guitar is completely original and in overall very good to excellent condition. There are no breaks, all solder joints are untouched and the original P-90 pick-up and electronics are as they should be. The volume pot is dated 1963 and the tone pot date is covered with solder but is original.
There is general playing wear and a handful of small dinks and nicks as to be expected of a guitar of this age but overall it is very clean and still retains a deep, un-faded cherry colour.
If you are looking for a good vintage SG Junior that isn’t going to break the bank, look no further. This is a great one.
