Originally launched in 1961 to replace the original single cutaway Les Paul, the SG was also known as a Les Paul (with the exception of the Special which was designated as an SG from the start) until mid 1963 when the Standard, Custom and Junior were officially renamed SG and the Les Paul name was dropped. This Custom Shop reissue is based on the original 1961 SG Standard and as such has the Les Paul name on the truss rod cover. This version is configured as a stoptail as opposed to the sideways vibrola set up.

This limited run was originally available in VOS and aged finishes. This particular example has been aged by the in-house team at the Custom Shop to give it the look of a well played but generally looked after rare vintage custom colour example. The ageing has been done to a high standard and is authentic looking. Some attractive lacquer checking along with a few dings and nicks, arm wear, finish discolouration, wide bevelled pickguard and aged true historic hardware adds to the vintage vibe. It’s a guitar that definitely has the wow factor when the case is opened.

Weighing just over 6lbs and with a very comfortable medium C neck profile and low action, this is an effortless playing guitar that begs to be played for hours on end. Acoustically it is loud and bright with some nice low end growl, especially on an open E chord. Plug it into a decent tube amp and the pair of PAF stickered Custom Buckers really shine and sound great in all three positions either clean or overdriven. They sound slightly brighter and a bit more aggressive than they would do in a Les Paul but this is all part of the SG thing.

It's hard to overstate just how cool this guitar looks in the flesh and combined with great tone and playability, it’s a winning combination.

Comes with the original Gibson Custom hard shell case, COA and all of the case candy.
